Converse HOOPATLANTA 'Get Active' Essay Contest

We are pleased to announce the creation of the Converse HOOPATLANTA Bounce Back Program's Converse HOOPATLANTA 'Get Active' Essay contest. We are excited about this program, which is designed to get students in Georgia thinking proactively about their health. Childhood obesity is a growing problem in the state of Georgia. Georgia has the third highest rate of overweight and obese children in the nation, according to data released by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (July 1, 2009).

The Converse HOOPATLANTA 'Get Active' Essay Contest invites 11th and 12th high school students from the Dekalb County School System (DCSS) to write an original essay about their personal active lifestyle, what they can do to promote active lifestyles and the benefits of an active lifestyle. The essay has an ambitious but important goal: to get our youth involved in the battle to help solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation. Winning essayists will receive awards totaling up to $2,000. The Health Education & Communication Center of Atlanta (HECCA) will be donating the scholarship funds to the Dekalb County Public Schools Foundation, Inc. for distribution to the winners. The first-place winners will be recognized during the 2010 summer Board of Education meeting. HECCA gratefully acknowledges Converse for its generous support of this worthy cause.
